Why I Wrote This Book
We begin thinking the moment that we are born. We begin by learning how to do the simple things like breathing, eating and being. As we get older, we begin wondering about the big world around us. We start asking questions. With everyday comes fresh ideas and new learnings. But at some point, we begin to ask ourselves unhelpful questions like, "what will others think of me?" Through that, we lose a bit of our curiosity. My hope is that we don't lose it for long. Because it's the things that make us curious that and make us nerdy that make us who we are. In this book, I wanted the kids to struggle with this social dynamic. I think Katherine Johnson was the perfect hero to teach them how to think for themselves. As a woman of the 20th century, Katherine had to face all sorts of pressure to suppress her intelligence. Thankfully, she found ways to use her mind to pursue her mathematical interests. That pursuit helped the United States get to outer space, the moon and beyond.
